Allied has been in Charlotte County since 1999. That means Charley in 2004 and Ian in 2022 — not as something we read about, but as weeks spent getting local businesses back on their feet.
What we learned
The companies that recovered quickly were not the ones with the newest equipment. They were the ones whose data was somewhere else, whose backups had actually been tested, and who knew before the storm what the first three phone calls would be.
What we do about it
- Backups that run automatically and are checked, not assumed
- Copies held off-site and separated from your network
- Regular test restores, because an untested backup is a hope rather than a plan
- A written recovery plan naming who calls whom and what comes back first
- A second internet circuit so you keep working when the first one fails
The question worth asking
If your building were unusable tomorrow morning, how long until your people could work again? Most businesses have never been asked. Fewer have tested the answer.
